What Is It

What Is Exposed Aggregate Concrete?

Honed aggregate is a decorative concrete finish where the cured surface is mechanically ground back using diamond tooling to reveal the natural stones within the mix. Unlike exposed aggregate, which uses a chemical retarder and pressure wash, honing produces a smoother, flatter stone profile with a refined, almost polished appearance.

The result is a surface that sits between the coarse texture of exposed aggregate and the uniformity of plain concrete. The stones are visible but sit flush with the surface rather than protruding above it, which gives honed aggregate a contemporary, architectural quality that suits modern home styles particularly well.

Properly installed and sealed, a honed aggregate surface will perform well for 25 to 30 years. It is a popular choice for pool surrounds, alfresco areas, and internal-to-external transitions where a more refined finish is preferred without sacrificing the character of natural stone.

HOW ITS DONE

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

Honed aggregate follows the same five-stage process as standard concrete, with the grinding and polishing stage added at the end. Getting the base preparation and concrete mix right is just as critical here as with any other finish.

01

Site Preparation

We excavate to the correct depth, clear existing material, and compact the sub-base thoroughly. Cranbourne's expansive clay soil requires particular attention at this stage to prevent cracking later.

02

Formwork and Reinforcement

Forms are set to the correct level and gradient. Steel mesh or bar reinforcement is placed to specification and control joints are positioned before the pour to manage stress relief in the slab.

03

Concrete Pour

We use quality concrete mixes with the correct aggregate for honing. The concrete is placed, screeded, and finished to a consistent level. The mix design matters here because the aggregate needs to hone cleanly.

04

Washing and Exposure

Once the concrete has cured fully, the surface is ground back using diamond tooling in progressively finer grits. This removes the surface cement and reveals the aggregate beneath at a smooth, flat profile.

05

Curing and Sealing

A penetrating sealer is applied to protect the surface, enhance the natural colour of the aggregate, and prevent staining. The sealer choice depends on the application and whether a matte or semi-gloss finish is preferred.

base & finish options

Available Finishes

The two most common questions we get on honed aggregate jobs are how it differs from exposed aggregate and which one is right for a particular application. The short answer is that exposed aggregate suits driveways and pool surrounds where grip is the priority, and honed aggregate suits patios, alfresco areas, and contemporary homes where a smoother, more refined look is preferred.

Both finishes reveal the natural stones within the concrete and both are considerably more attractive than plain grey concrete. The right choice depends on the application, the home style, and personal preference. We walk through all of this during the free quote visit.

Most Popular

grey cement base

The most widely used base for honed aggregate. Grey cement produces a cool, neutral background that works with virtually any home style and lets the natural stone tones show through clearly after grinding.

Light Homes

Off-White Base

An off-white or cream cement base creates a warmer, lighter finished surface. Popular on rendered and light-brick homes, particularly for alfresco areas and pool surrounds where a brighter look is preferred.

Contemporary

Charcoal cement base

A dark cement base produces a high-contrast honed finish with the aggregate stones reading sharply against the dark background. Popular on modern homes with dark facades, particularly in Clyde North and Officer.

Warmer Tones

Coloured Oxide Mixes

Iron oxide pigments added to the cement produce a range of warm earthy tones that work well with brick homes and landscaping using natural materials. Terracotta, sandstone, and tan are the most popular choices.

Premium

Custom Blends

We work with trusted local suppliers to source premium aggregate blends including quartz mixes, river pebbles, and multicoloured stone combinations for higher-end projects where a one-of-a-kind result is the goal.

Refined Look

Honed and Pavilion Finish

The sealer applied at the end of the job determines the final sheen of the surface. A matte seal keeps the look natural and understated. A semi-gloss seal brings out the colour of the aggregate more strongly and gives the surface a subtle lustre.

WHERE WE USE IT

BEST SUITED APPLICATIONS

Honed aggregate works across a full range of residential applications. It is particularly well suited to areas where a refined, contemporary look is more important than maximum grip.

Driveways

We lay honed concrete driveways across Cranbourne and the City of Casey, grinding the cured surface back to a smooth, refined finish that suits modern homes. Every driveway is formed, reinforced, and finished to last.

Patios and Alfrescos

The refined look of honed aggregate works beautifully on patios and alfresco areas where appearance matters as much as durability. We work with homeowners and builders across the south-east on new builds and renovations, laying surfaces that handle furniture, foot traffic, and the Australian climate without issue.

Garage and Shed Pads

Honed aggregate is one of the few finishes that works across an internal to external transition, matching an indoor polished floor to an outdoor entertaining area. We use the same aggregate mix and a compatible sealer system on both sides so the look flows through.

Pool Surrounds

Honed aggregate makes an attractive, contemporary pool surround with a smoother feel underfoot than standard exposed aggregate. We specify a fine-grit finish and the right sealer to keep slip resistance solid in wet areas.

Pathways

Garden paths, front entry pathways, side access, and step surrounds all suit a honed finish where a smooth, polished look is preferred. We match the finish to your existing or planned driveway where possible to create a seamless look across the property.

stairs

Concrete stairs are formed carefully to achieve consistent rise and tread dimensions that meet Australian building standards and feel natural underfoot. We finish them in honed aggregate to match the surrounding driveway or path so the whole area ties together.

Why Choose It

Why HONED CONCRETE Is Worth It

Refined Contemporary Look

The smooth, flat stone reveal suits modern homes, architectural builds, and contemporary landscaping in a way that standard exposed aggregate does not. It is a finish that reads as considered and deliberate rather than purely functional.

Durable and Long-Lasting

The aggregate is revealed through grinding rather than surface removal, which means the stones are exposed at their full depth and held securely in the concrete matrix. A well-installed honed surface will last 25 to 30 years without needing replacement.

Suits Indoor to Outdoor Transitions

The smoother profile of honed aggregate makes it one of the few concrete finishes that works well for internal-to-external transitions, where a consistent look between an indoor polished concrete floor and an outdoor entertaining area is the goal.

Black outlined calendar icon with three tabs on top

Low Maintenance

A regular pressure wash and a reseal every two to three years is all that is needed. The smooth surface actually makes cleaning slightly easier than exposed aggregate because there is less texture for dirt and organic matter to embed into.

Good Slip Resistance

While not as grippy as exposed aggregate, honed concrete provides solid slip resistance underfoot, particularly when a fine-grit finish is used. It is suitable for pool surrounds and paths when specified correctly, and the sealer used can be adjusted to improve traction if needed.

Adds Property Value

A honed aggregate finish is increasingly associated with higher-end residential projects across Melbourne's south-east. On a new build or renovation in Cranbourne, Berwick, or Clyde North, a well-specified honed driveway or entertaining area is a genuine value-adding feature.

Pricing Guide

How Much Does HONED CONCRETE COST?

Honed aggregate in the Cranbourne area typically costs between $175 and $195 per square metre. It sits above exposed aggregate because the diamond grinding and polishing process adds significant labour time to the job.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT PRICE:

Aggregate Mix and Base Colour

Standard grey base with a common aggregate sits at the lower end. Custom blends and oxide-tinted bases attract a modest premium.

Grinding Depth and grit

A finer finish requiring more grinding passes takes more time and increases the cost slightly compared to a coarser stone reveal.

Site access and preperation

Difficult access, significant excavation requirements, or poor existing sub-base conditions add to the overall price.

Total Area

Larger jobs attract a lower per-square-metre rate. Mobilisation costs are spread across more area, which brings the per-metre price down.

AFTERCARE

Caring for Your Honed Aggregate

Honed aggregate is straightforward to maintain. We walk through the aftercare process with every customer at job completion. Here is the summary.

01

Initial Curing

Keep foot traffic off the surface for the first 24 hours. Walk on it lightly for the first seven days and avoid driving on it for at least seven days. Wait a minimum of 28 days before parking heavy vehicles. We give you specific guidance based on your conditions.

02

Regular Cleaning

The smoother surface of honed aggregate is slightly easier to clean than exposed aggregate. Sweep regularly and pressure wash once or twice a year. Mild detergent and water is usually all that is needed. Avoid prolonged contact with oil or petrol.

03

Resealing

Reseal every two to three years depending on traffic and sun exposure. The sealer protects the surface, maintains the stone colour, and guards against staining. We can supply and apply the correct sealer matched to your specific finish and aggregate mix.

04

Crack Management

Minor hairline cracks can develop over time, particularly in areas with expansive clay soil like much of Cranbourne. Keep control joints clean and resealed. Contact us if you notice a crack that is widening rather than staying stable. Catching it early is always cheaper than leaving it.

GOT A QUESTION?
  • What is the difference between honed and exposed aggregate?

Exposed aggregate uses a chemical retarder and pressure wash to remove the surface cement after pouring, leaving a coarser, more textured finish where the stones protrude slightly above the surface. Honed aggregate is ground back mechanically after curing using diamond tooling, which produces a smoother, flatter stone reveal. Exposed aggregate provides more grip and suits driveways and pool surrounds particularly well. Honed aggregate has a more refined look and suits alfresco areas, contemporary homes, and internal-to-external transitions.

  • How much does honed aggregate cost per m2 in Cranbourne?

Honed aggregate in Cranbourne and the City of Casey typically ranges from $175 to $195 per square metre. It sits above exposed aggregate because the diamond grinding process adds significant labour time. The price varies depending on the aggregate mix, base colour, grinding depth, site access, and total area. We provide a free written itemised quote on-site before any work starts.

  • Is honed aggregate slippery when wet?

Honed aggregate provides reasonable slip resistance when wet, though not quite as much as exposed aggregate due to its smoother surface profile. For pool surrounds and wet areas, we recommend a fine-grit grinding finish rather than a very smooth or polished finish, and we can specify a sealer with a higher anti-slip rating where needed. We will recommend the right finish for your specific application during the quote visit.

  • How long does honed aggregate last?

A well-installed and sealed honed aggregate surface will typically last 25 to 30 years. Because the aggregate is revealed through grinding rather than surface removal, the stones are held securely at full depth in the concrete matrix and cannot be dislodged over time.

  • Can honed aggregate be used inside as well as outside?

Yes. Honed aggregate is one of the few concrete finishes that works for internal-to-external transitions, where the goal is a consistent look between an indoor polished or honed floor and an outdoor entertaining area. The key is specifying the same aggregate mix and a compatible sealer system for both areas. We can advise on this during the quote visit.

  • How often does honed aggregate need to be resealed?

Every two to three years is our general recommendation, depending on the amount of sun exposure and foot or vehicle traffic the surface receives. Resealing protects the surface from staining, maintains the colour of the aggregate, and extends the life of the finish. We can supply and apply the right sealer for your specific mix and finish level.
